About

Some context and perspective

“9 to 5”, Dolly Parton’s signature song – know of it? Most would, I think.

and “That’s Life” – as sung by “Ol’ Blue Eyes”, Frank Sinatra – for countless millions of course – hamsters on the treadmill, challenges great and small. Normal.

But, for the writer, with all “That” becoming more visible in the rear-view mirror now, rather than on the road ahead, let’s leave the detail – relating to the writer that is – where it belongs, behind. Ahead is where we’re looking and the pleasure of relative freedom to choose is very satisfying.

So, like modern air-travel as popularised by Michael O’Leary, Ryanair Group CEO, cabin-baggage only and let’s go, adventures await!

In the current context, I guess a “cabin-baggage only” analogy might be some insight and hopefully wisdom accumulated over a long time – and travelling light, so to speak, I think gives one the opportunity to dump the heavy baggage and move with the times.

Ok, where are we going then? Where are these adventures?

First, excitement and joy shared is doubled – então cada passo no futuro ao lado da minha linda companheira de muitos anos Tania é estimado.

And, just looking at a few of the most important things, for now, on the road ahead.

Cyber security matters have interested me a lot over the past few years. It’s right there in terms of technology trends and I’ve reached an advanced stage in one of the leading MSc degree programs in the field. Very challenging but fascinating. I expect to discuss cyber security quite a bit here.

Web technology, both server and client side, have also interested me for quite some time. This site and its continued development is an expression of that, and especially as a platform to apply site security skills and techniques. It will probably be another frequent topic when time allows.

There would be a big hole in the ‘About’ thing without a mention of an unrelated topic: ‘Hiking’ – serious hiking, that is. It’s been a joy that Tania and I have shared for many years now, having hiked probably thousands of kilometers together in Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Brazil. We look forward to much more in the years ahead. I did have a simple blog about hiking at www.walksforyou.com but I haven’t paid much attention to it for a long time as life has moved on. I still keep an eye on miscreant traffic though. To improve site security it is patched regularly, and is behind the Cloudflare service and a server-side firewall. A lot of IP address ranges have been blocked, mostly but not exclusively US, ex-Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries, China, etc., who try to exploit it. Two issues on that: 1) if you’re in an IP range that’s blocked, sorry, the door’s locked as too many baddies lurk in that address range, and 2) to be on the safe side, please make sure your anti-virus is current if you plan to visit it.

There are a lot of great hiking photos on walksforyou.com so I may take the site down, transfer some of the more memorable stuff and cover any interesting hiking activity from now on here. Maybe.
